This book unravels the surprising life story of Gideon Chitayat, whose family parted from a life of luxury and comfort to that of sweat, toil, and poverty in the early 1950s in Israel. In a twist of fortune, the Chitayat family had to flee Iraq and run for their lives to Israel, trading their grand house, chaffered car, and delicacies for a tent in an immigrants’ camp, with sand as a floor, eight metal beds, in a foreign country with a foreign language and culture.
The new reality made Gideon’s father, formerly the proud head of the family, unable to function as a provider, and consequently, the author’s elder siblings all had to leave home. The elder brother went to live in a Kibbutz, whereas Gideon’s elder sister moved in with a family in Ramat Gan, and his two younger brother and sister were sent to children’s homes for immigrants.
At the tender age of eleven, Gideon found himself having to grow up prematurely and start supporting his mother and infant sister. Thanks to his determination, out-of-the-box thinking, and willingness to run risks for the sake of excellence, against all odds he managed to realize all his dreams and achieve his highest goals.
Relying on his childish hunches, Gideon successfully detected opportunities to eke out a living, bettering his family’s living conditions without dropping out of school. Making every possible effort to receive an education and get accepted into the native Israeli society. He managed to enroll in a school outside the immigrant camp, in the nearby town of Kiryat Ono and combined excellence in school with hard work after school to make a living.
Encouraged by his teachers, Gideon managed to enroll in a prestigious Tel Aviv secondary school. Upon learning that his father objected to him continuing his schooling, he left home for the Haifa Military Boarding School (the Israeli WestPoint), from which he graduated with honors, and thereafter, joined the Israeli Defense Forces to pursue his dream of becoming an Armored Crops officer.
He served in the Israeli Defense Forces and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel(reserve), Despite being rapidly promoted and highly praised in the Army Gideon decided to terminate his military career for the sake of an academic one. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in Economics, and an MBA with honors, from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem he won a Ph.D. scholarship from Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Gideon Chitayat founded the Jerusalem Institute of Management (JIM) a partnership between the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Harvard Business School. He founded the General Management & Business Strategy Consulting Company (G.M.B.S.). His recent book, “Boards of Directors and Management Styles in Israel”, was published [in Hebrew] in 2021 by Matar Publishers.
